Pimentel is a city in the Dominican Republic's Duarte Province. It is part of the San Francisco de Macorís metropolitan area. The population was 35,989 at the 2012 census.

History[]
|ts origins date back to the beginning of the 18th century (1700s). Since then, it has been identified with different names, the first being Cuaba, then Barbero and finally Pimentel, the latter to honor the Dominican military and politician Pedro Antonio Pimentel (1830-1874), one of the heroes of the Restoration.
When the Sánchez - La Vega railway was built in 1880, the passage of this tram had a great economic impact on the region, but after its disappearance, Pimentel found itself faced with the challenge of overcoming this crisis and finding new ways to generate income.
Geography[]
Pimentel is located at 19.1851° N, 70.1084° W. According to the ONE, this town has a total land area of 124.67 square kilometers (48.14 square miles). It is bordered by the city of San Francisco de Macorís on the north, the town of Castillo on the east, the Sánchez Ramírez Province city of Cotuí on the southeast and town of La Mata on the south, and the town of Las Guáranas on the west. The town is crossed by Routes 17 and 132.

The economy of this municipality is fundamentally agricultural, its main products being rice, cocoa, bananas and coffee. It also benefits from livestock for the dairy industry.

The patron saint festivities of the second largest city of Duarte are held in honor of the Virgen de las Mercedes, from September 16 until the 24th.
